Peace of Fear title artwork and liminal game imagery

The 30-second version

A quick look.

  • Question: could a controlled, atmospheric game make relaxation exercises more engaging?
  • My contribution: created the environments, interface, and a high-fidelity conceptual video.
  • Deliverable: a vision demo of the proposed experience; therapeutic effectiveness has not been established.

Question

What if an unsettling place could invite a calmer response?

My undergraduate thesis explored how an atmospheric game might make active relaxation more engaging for young adults.

Read the details

The project began with the observation that some young adults find standard therapeutic exercises tedious or intimidating. I explored a digital experience that people might want to engage with. Its intended audience was young adults experiencing mild-to-moderate anxiety.

Concept

Liminal horror, with room to practise relaxation.

Fear-inducing stimuli and relaxation techniques form the proposed game loop.

Read the details

The concept brings together liminal horror, gamification, and ideas from exposure-based approaches. In a controlled digital setting, players would encounter in-game challenges while practising active relaxation. This was a design exploration, not a clinical intervention or a validated treatment.

Process

Prototype the feeling before building the game.

Blender environments and After Effects compositing establish the atmosphere, interface, and proposed interactions.

Read the details

I focused on a high-fidelity conceptual demo rather than an implemented game engine. Environments were modelled and lit in Blender to create an uncanny, unsettling, yet strangely peaceful atmosphere.

I composited the interface, HUD, and gameplay animations in Adobe After Effects. The proposed interaction strategy wove reward loops and relaxation elements into the horror aesthetic.

Deliverable

A vision demo of the experience.

The video prototype communicates mechanics, atmosphere, and the intended relaxation loop.

Read the details

The final output is a conceptual video prototype showing how the experience could work. It explores the intersection of serious games and mental health; it does not demonstrate therapeutic efficacy.
